The agreement to establish Tuktut
Nogait secured a conservation area of 16 340 square
kilometres of representative tundra landscape
in the Melville Hills, wildlife
including the herds of Bluenose caribou, and typical
species of Western Arctic vegetation.
Located in the Northwest Territories, north of
the Arctic Circle and 830 kilometres northwest
of Yellowknife, this remote park safeguards a
significant portion of a larger national park
proposal, presently a land reserve awaiting the
completion of consultation and negotiation
for its inclusion. Archaeological data collection
at present poses some fascinating questions about
the first people
to inhabit the Tundra Hills natural region represented
by the park..
