A merging of many habitats,
including temporary homes for the black tern,
rarely found this far north, and the snowy owl
from the open arctic tundra, give the park a
diversity of both flora and fauna. Many rare
and threatened species are monitored by park
officials whose research has focused on the
wintering habits of the spotted turtle, the
herring gull colonies on Grey Island, the Osprey's
recovering population and the Fox Snake whose
movements are tracked by implanted radio transmitters.
Of the 35 species of reptiles and amphibians
- more than are found anywhere else in Canada
- nine are significantly rare; the five-line
skink, for example, is our only lizard and the
tiny ring-necked snake is a resplendent cobalt
blue.
